ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [THE SEASONS.] 4 calendar sheets. 1897.
Each panel is 16 1/4x8 1/2 inches, 41x21 cm. Ketterlinus Lithographic Mfg. Co., Philadelphia.
Condtions vary, generally B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image. Matted and framed.
Such was Mucha's success with his first series of decorative panels depicting The Seasons (1896), that American printers scrambled to market the images. The Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia used the images on this company calendar in 1898. And then, in 1902, the "Carriage Dealers / Philadelphia Exposition" also appropriated one of his maidens for their promotion (Rennert / Weill 18 var. 5). In 1904 another American printing firm published the Seasons, each within a gilt border, and bearing a line of verse by the likes of Longfellow, Whittier, Lowell and William Motherwell. Rennert/ Weill 18 var. 4.
